Description:
Lucrezia Borgia, an opera by Gaetano Donizetti, tells the tragic story of Lucrezia, a noblewoman feared for her family’s dark reputation. In Venice, Lucrezia encounters the young soldier Gennaro, unaware that he is her estranged son. Though she feels a deep affection for him, Gennaro publicly insults the Borgia name, drawing the ire of Lucrezia’s husband, Duke Alfonso, who plots to kill him. Lucrezia intervenes secretly to save Gennaro, giving him an antidote after he is poisoned. However, at a later banquet, Lucrezia, unaware that Gennaro is present, poisons the guests in a fit of vengeance. Realizing too late that her son is among the victims, she is heartbroken as he dies in her arms, devastated by the unintended tragedy.
