After Sol Gabetta's performance in Shostakovich, promising a captivating moment, Tugan Sokhiev brings forth Bruckner's mesmerizing Symphony No. 7. Who could better enhance its lyricism than the Staatskapelle Dresden?
Created in 1959 by the illustrious Rostropovich, Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, whose motifs echo through the composer's String Quartet No. 8, is a formidable work, demanding for both soloist and orchestra – significant parts are assigned to the horn and timpani. Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 earned him his greatest success at its premiere in Berlin in 1884. Dedicated to Louis II of Bavaria, it also pays homage to Wagner, who passed away the previous year, and whom the Austrian composer greatly admired. Its poignant Adagio – brilliantly used by Luchino Visconti in his film 'Senso' – serves as an immense and unforgettable memorial to the great departed.
